Since its inception in 2013, the ASU Department of Theatre Arts' BFA Dance program has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to excellence in the arts and dance education. This high standard has inspired students to thrive in their careers after graduation.
The inaugural class graduated in 2017, and since then, alumni have pursued professional opportunities with prestigious companies such as Atlanta Dance Connection, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company (DCDC), Dayton Contemporary Dance Company II (DCDC2), Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Dallas Black Dance Theatre Encore, Philadanco, Dissonance Dance Theatre, Cleo Parker Robinson Second Company, Anthony Burrell Dance Company, Ballethnic Dance Company, Arova Contemporary Ballet, Columbia City Ballet, Montgomery Ballet, Collage Dance Collective, the Elisa Monte Dance Trainee Program, Viver Brasil, Carnival Cruise Line, Walt Disney World Cruise Line, and Keith Sweat Entertainment.
Graduates have also performed with the Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders, Red Mountain Theatre, and on the National Tour of Hamilton. Alumni roles have included serving as Dance Director at Florida Memorial University and participating in significant events such as Coachella 2022 with City Girls, the HBO Max series "Rap Sh!t," and the BET Awards 2023 with Migos. Other notable performances include MIA Rolling Loud 2023 with City Girls, the BET Hip Hop Awards 2023 with Sexyy Red, and the Hood Hottest Princess Tour 2023. Alumni have gained recognition as the leading lady in Usher's music video for “RUIN” and participated in the BET Awards 2024 and Sexyy Red's 4 President Tour 2024.
Additionally, alumni have appeared in major productions like The Color Purple (2023), Coming 2 America*(2021), and the Super Bowl LV Halftime Show featuring The Weeknd (2021), as well as the Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show featuring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar (2022). They have also participated in high-profile events, including Beyoncé in Dubai (2023), the BET Awards 2023 with Busta Rhymes, John Legend, Victoria Monet, and Coco Jones, and the Grammy Awards Salute to 50 Years of Hip-Hop featuring artists like Latto, Teyana Taylor, Summer Walker, Glorilla, Flo Milli, and Keith Sweat.
Alumni have also taken roles as assistant choreographers and performers at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in productions like Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat*(2024) and Blues in the Night (2024). Graduates are signed to agencies including Block Agency LA and Xcel Talent Agency.
Many graduates have continued their education in graduate programs for dance at the University of Illinois at Champaign, California State University, and the University of Alabama. Others have pursued careers as dance educators in Birmingham, Mobile, and Montgomery, Alabama, as well as in Atlanta, Georgia, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and throughout Texas public schools.
Students in the BFA Dance program have been awarded partial and full scholarships to numerous nationally and internationally recognized summer dance intensives. These opportunities to audition have been made possible through faculty support and student participation in conferences over the past seven years. Notable institutions include the Atlanta Ballet School Summer Intensive, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Anthony Burrell-Breaking Barriers Dance Intensive, the American Dance Festival, Bates Dance Festival, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Cuyahoga Community College (Tri C Summer Intensive), Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre, and Lines Contemporary Ballet Summer Intensive, among others.
This comprehensive approach to training and opportunities ensures that ASU’s BFA Dance graduates are well-prepared to excel in the dynamic field of dance.
